Treasures of the Snow ~ Book and Movie Favorites!

Job 38:22

During this chilly, winter season, a good book and movie are always welcome! Thankfully, wholesome books are in abundance but movies are more of a challenge. I wanted to share with you the following  gem...

"High in the Swiss Alps, little Danny disappears. When he is found---alive, but seriously injured---his sister, Annette, vows revenge. Lucien, who caused the accident, escapes to the forest where he is taken in by a godly old woodcarver. Lucien wants to make amends, but will Annette learn to forgive him? Treasures of the Snow was filmed in the breathtaking Swiss Alps. The charm of genuine antique chalets will delight you. And you will experience real life drama, the tensions of ordinary people under pressures and the satisfaction of righteousness rewarded." ~ From the Publisher

There is also the excellent book (for 8-12 years) which inspired the movie. Treasures of the Snow by Patricia St. John illustrates forgiveness to our young ladies in a very realistic way that is sure to turn hearts toward the Savior.

Wholesome entertainment is hard to find but these are truly some of the best out there! Though the movie isn't to today's standards of fancy filming, the excellent message outweighs it.

Scripture that Summarizes the Story:

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
~ Ephesians 4:32

Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate
by Raimundo De Madrazo Y Garetta

A cold winter day, a blazing fire, a book… What is missing? Cocoa, of course!

Have you ever made some from scratch? Why not bless your family tonight with a tray of mugs laden with hot chocolate? Be lavish… Add dollops of freshly whipped cream or some nice and thick, homemade marshmallows.  These small details in life will enrich the memories of all. You will delight them with the pleasing aroma and comfort them with the warmth of a steaming cup in their hand…

Though is seems by the painting above that the French really understood how to appreciate the tasty things of life, it is said that George and Martha Washington enjoyed hot chocolate together when it was still a European treat. They used to drink their imported cocoa daily out of gold and white porcelain cups which they would refer to as "chocolate cups". You can find Mrs. Washington's recipe here.

Questions for mothers and maidens:
  • Do you know where chocolate first originated?
  • Do you know what European country was the first to embrace it?
  • Do you know what countries grow it today?

Why not prepare a pretty tray and dust out those dainty mugs and enjoy an evening of "sweet" fellowship with your family before spring makes her entrance.

"A generous man will prosper;
he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed."
~ Proverbs 11:25

Two Ladies Ice Skating at Central Park

Two Ladies Ice Skating in Central Park by Walter Granville Smith

The thrill of gliding on the ice… These ladies look like they are having fun! The lovely apparel isn't a hinderance to them. In fact, it looks more exciting in their fanciful attire! Did you know that Prince Albert and Queen Victoria were avid ice skaters themselves? She especially delighted in watching her husband skate on the lake in Buckingham Palace. In 1841, she recorded the following incident in her diary:
"…the ice cracked, and Albert was in the water up to his head, even for a moment below. In my agony of fright and despair I screamed and stretched out my arm... My Dearest Albert managed to catch my arm and reached the ground in safety."
(Of course, you probably won't encounter a situation like the queen as long as you skate in a proper and designated area.)

Questions for Mothers and Maidens:
  • What time period do you think this painting takes place in?
  • Where do you think it takes place at based on the clues?

Winter Activity:

Have you ever ice skated before? Why not take this winter opportunity and enjoy the crisp air on frozen waters? Gather up your loved ones and bundle up. It is excellent exercise and will make for wonderful memories. Embrace the change in the weather and enjoy it the classical way through this pleasurable pastime.
