Victorian Scrapbook ~ January 1864

Almost 150 years ago, Godey was publishing magazines for women. Sarah Josepha Hale, "editress" had one goal in mind. It was merely to education women. She wrote "not that they may usurp the situation, or encroach on the prerogatives of man; but that each individual may lend her aid to the intellectual and moral character of those within her sphere".

She knew that women were teachers and of great influence in the home. To educate and nourish the mind of a mother was like feeding the future of mankind.

Here are some magazine "clips" from the January issue of Godey's Lady's Book. Perhaps we can still appreciate what was interesting to women many years ago?

The Queen of Sheba ~ In Search of Answers

I have always marvelled at the Queen of Sheba, a woman who sought knowledge and wisdom to such a degree. Who was this royalty who journeyed over 1,000 miles in a climate of extreme heat and dry terrain, in a day and age when travel was not comfortable, convenient, nor safe. What kind of woman would go to such measures to ask "hard questions concerning the name of the LORD"?

"And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions…"
~ 1 Kings 10:1
In this modern day society filled with distractions of every kind, we are often too quick to accept or too lazy to care… This woman took a caravan across the vast desert in search of the truth! We have access to it in one printed volume with thousands of Bible translations and biblical references at our fingertips!  Do we constantly search the Scriptures for the answers to life's "hard questions"? Do we give up our precious time (like the Queen of Sheba) to seek His wisdom?

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
~ Proverbs 1:7

King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba by Claude Vignon

Dear readers,

May we daily, devote time in our hectic schedule to study His will, learn His ways and live according to His statutes. May we always seek and find!

"The entrance of thy words giveth light;
it giveth understanding unto the simple."
~ Psalm 119:130

As we start a new year, I pray your journey brings you closer to the King of Kings. May those who see your life in the Lord be in awe, as the Queen of Sheba was with Solomon when she exclaimed,

"Blessed be the Lord thy God…"
~ 1 King 10:9a

To have someone associate you with Him would be one of the greatest moments of your existence! For "there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth!" (Luke 15:10).

Solomon and the Queen of Sheba by Giovanni Demin

"Call unto me, and I will answer thee,
and show thee great and mighty things,
which thou knowest not."

~ Jeremiah 33:3

Marmee's Advice...

"Poor girls don't stand any chance, Belle says, unless they put themselves forward," sighed Meg.

"Then we'll be old maids," said Jo stoutly.

"Right, Jo; better be happy old maids than unhappy wives, or unmaidenly girls, running about to find husbands," said Mrs. March decidedly. "Don't be troubled, Meg; poverty seldom daunts a sincere lover. Some of the best and most honored women I know were poor girls, but so love-worthy that they were not allowed to be old maids. Leave these things to time; make this home happy, so that you may be fit for homes of your own, if they are offered you, and contented here if they are not. One thing remember, my girls; mother is always ready to be your confidant, father to be your friend; and both of us trust and hope that our daughters, whether married or single, will be the pride and comfort of our lives."

"We will, Marmee, we will!" cried both, with all their hearts, as she bade them good-night."
