Euodia & Syntyche or Skirt-ing the Issue

Here Bring Your Wounded Hearts by Elspeth Young

"I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche,
that they be of the same mind in the Lord."
~ Philippians 4:2

Euodias and Syntyche were both godly women in the church of Christ. The Bible indicates a difference of opinion hanging between the two and Apostle Paul felt the need to instruct them. Though their tale is told in but one sentence in the Scriptures (shown above), there is a very important teaching here for believing women today.

If there was a clear cut, black and white answer, I think Apostle Paul would have gently corrected the sister in error. Instead, he urged them to be of the "same mind in the Lord". He basically encouraged them to concentrate on the important truths that made them sisters in Christ instead of thinking on their differences.

We have many similar situations between Christian women today. Head coverings, modesty and femininity seem to be in the forefront. Such subjects of controversy and if you notice, most are of the physical nature! The examples I am going to use in this article are covering the latter two subjects though the conclusion extends into many areas of our Christian life.

There have been many excellent writings by believing women about what modesty and femininity means to them and how they interpret the Scriptures which supports their beliefs. It is a beautiful thing to see women concerned enough about God's will that they search, dig and ponder what it is that He wants for them! However, I think we must tread very delicately in these waters when we are preaching our interpretations for sometimes it brings only strife. I am not implying that we should no longer share our beliefs, but to consider how we do it. Please allow me to explain by humbly breaking down some barriers.

  1. I am so sick of the word Modest. Thank you for this post. I was newly convicted of my wardrobe and when I knew it was time to reevaluate my way of dressing I stumbled across a modesty blog and that is what helped "mold" me into dressing what I thought was the proper way of a Christian woman to dress. So for the past three months I have been modifying the guideline I received from these modest blogs, and into something real and not fictitious. I have become so tired of this modest topic and trend because of exactly what you said. It builds barriers. You should see someof the outfits I wore. Denim skirts and plain tops.....it just looked ridiculous on me with my heavily tattooed body. The truth is,I am not modest. I am a sinner who easily becomes irritated with people, but who truly loves Jesus and has surrendered her life to him. So with that said, I have committed to dressing appropriate, not modest, while the Lord continues to work on areas in my life that are icky.

    1. Thank you for sharing. "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

May HE convict you in your new path. May you "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. " (2 Peter 3:18) ~ JES

  2. I just found your blog this morning, and I have already added a link on my own little blog. THANK you for the post on skirts vs pants. I actually did a dress experiment last year, and posted about it for a week. I came to the conclusion that dresses are not the only modest apparel, and sometimes they can be down right IMMODEST (such as when a horse bucks you off). I am working on feminizing my wardrobe more, and as long as my husband is happy with my clothing, and I am displaying the attitudes you have listed--I'm good with jeans and boots for my lifestyle. Face it ladies--no matter what we wear, as long we love the Lord with all our hearts--we are sisters in the faith.

Can't wait to read more of your posts.

    1. Thanks for sharing. Funny because I just made some "split skirts" for our horseback riding jaunts :) Before that, I wore leggings underneath which could be very HOT in the summer. Have a wonderful day ~ JES

  3. Thank you for posting this. I remember when I was trying to decide what was Christian to wear there were my daughter's (she is 14) friends were asking "is your mom turning Amish" I thought that was a bit over board and girls just being girls. God has humbled me since then. I wear mostly skirts but I try my hardest not to be "frumpy", which can happen pretty easily. My husband reacts to me diffrently with what I wear. Not in an inappropriate way but if I wear a plain ole denim skirt with a plain ole shirt I can see the diffrience when I wear something pretty yet still modest. I love being a woman and dressing pretty.

Thank you again for posting this has also gave me renewed excitment about being a example to my daughter and others in the way I dress. It is so sad when we go to church and it is almost like I need to put blinders on my boys and husband when we walk in expecially since it has been well over 100 each day. I pray for them but I try not to be jugmental towards them. It is hard being a Christian that is human.

    God Bless,
    Jen

    1. Thank you for sharing Jen. Yes, frumpy is often associated with modesty and skirts and is something we need to work on. There are many ways to be modest and still be lovely as a women ;)
