Importance of Noah's Flood to Mothers and Maidens

The Dove Returning to the Ark by Mary Jane Q Cross

I have always had a fascination with Noah's Ark and paintings like these (by Mary Jane Q Cross) stir up the imagination to wonder and reflect. What was it like during those times? What a beautiful mentor would be found in Noah's wife and what godly friends would his daughter-in-law's have made! Many scientific and historical mysteries lie inside that ark. Many answers to the world around us are found by studying the scars that the world wide flood left behind (think Grand Canyon). Faith in the Scriptures can be enriched when we find evidence that all this really occurred and that there is proof that it all happened just like the word of God instructs.

Why is "Noah's Flood" so important for Mothers & Maidens?

It is important that we as women have answers to questions regarding Noah's Ark and other Bible related science topics that are under scrutiny. The Scriptures are under attack and we need to give solid  scientific explanations to children and adults that are wavering in their faith because of the aggressive teachings of secular science.  The Bible says we are to give an answer for the hope that lies within us (1 Peter 3:15). Science based information is critical in this age where evolution is being forced at the people as "fact" when it is actually their "faith" in how the world came about. Their desire is to make sense of creation without the Creator! We must remember that evolution is a theory and not proven as it is taught in the education system and assumed in the media. We need to equip ourselves to give edifying answers to our loved ones so that they can teach the generation to come with confidence that everything the Bible says is true. If they doubt one area of Scripture, what is to keep them from questioning the rest? Look how quickly the family of Noah was corrupted after the flood! We are warned to...

"keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee."
~ 1 Timothy 6:20-21

Noah's Daughter-in-Law in the Dovecote by Mary Jane Q Cross

Science Suggestion:

Research the Biblical evidence of the flood. Did you know that there are "creation scientists" who are scientists devoted to the Scriptures? They study the world through Biblical glasses and examine science from that perspective. When they scrutinize the Grand Canyon, they see evidence of Noah's Flood doing all that carving in the earth. They support these theories with scientific proof which provides us with solid information that the Word of God can be trusted. You will be amazed at the scientific testimony that verifies Biblical history and authenticity!

A book that we read and really enjoyed on the subject which will delight your daughters was actually a (full color illustrated) picture book (though it was chock full of information and I would consider it for girls of about 8-12 years).  In the Days of Noah by Gloria Clanin dazzled my young maiden and brought a whole new perspective on the flood history. It showed Ham, Shem and Japheth finding godly women to marry and had Noah's wife being a "teacher to the younger women". The story made history come alive in a sweet but savage way since the author also depicted the wicked world and what you would find in it at that time (an interesting parallel to today's society of disbelief). The book also gives a fictional account of how things may have happened using biblical history and creation science support. The second half of the book focuses on questions and answers regarding why she wrote the things she did in the story and the historical and scientific reasons for the scenarios. Included are many creation science facts discussed to give the readers information about flood geology in an easy to understand format.

  • Mt. St. Helens Tribute to the Flood DVD (See canyons and rock layers (the sort you may have been taught take millions of years to form) created in a very short time! In this video, Dr. Steven Austin shares his spectacular and unique photography of the volcano and its after-effects. Along with thousands of other scientists and educated professionals, Dr. Austin is convinced that the Biblical Flood is reliable and is vital to a true understanding of history, its purpose, and destiny. This is one of the best tools for witnessing to non-Christians!)
  • Flood Geology DVD (This stunning collection of videos from the Creation Museum explains the possible mechanisms for the Flood and the tremendous effects that the Flood had on the earth, including fossils and the post-Flood Ice Age. Be fascinated and educated as you watch these eye-opening programs.)
  • Creation Mini-Series DVD Pack (Basic introduction set to creation science and why it is so vital a teaching along with information that supports science and the Scpritures, we have probably watched this set five times already in our household!)
  • The "Answers Book ~ Boxed Set" (With this three book set, your home or library will hold over ninety faith-affirming answers to some of the most challenging questions about faith, science, and the Bible. Prepare yourself, your family, and your church to answer the questions of friends, and skeptics, and defend against the prevalent secular humanist culture that is invading our schools, government, and even the Christian community.)
  • Genesis Record by Henry M. Morris (The Genesis Record is the only commentary on the complete book of Genesis written by a creationist scientist. Written as a narrative exposition rather than a critical verse-by-berse analysis, the book is equally useful to both the theologically trained and the layperson.)
  • New Defender's Creation Bible KJV (This study Bible provides a handbook for a solid defense of the accuracy, integrity, and inspiration of the Bible, a seven-day creation, and Jesus as God's incarnate son.)

Waiting for Shem, Ham & Japheth

Return of the Dove to the Ark by Sir John Everett Millais

"On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth,
together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark."
~ Genesis 7:13

Regarding the Sons of Noah and the Godly Generation of Men Today

Being that the sons of Noah were believers of God, would they have fallen into the folly of marrying a woman who lacked devotion to God? They knew that hard times were coming and it was imperative to find wives that would be prepared to start civilization from scratch, with the fear of the Lord as the foundation.

Godly young men in today's society realize the importance of this soul searching as well. They know that life is a battlefield and the help meet is a huge factor that can make or break his goals for his family in the kingdom of God.

Regarding the Daughter-in-Laws of Noah and Godly Maidens to be Married

Dear daughter-in-laws of Noah! How many lessons their lives can teach us! Let us consider today that these maiden's married godly men who provided safety in God's arms during that world wide deluge. What if they had married someone of the world? Their loved one would have perished! What if they had married that handsome charmer that they felt "sure" would eventually come to God with their "wise" management? They would have met the same fate of the others in the deep dark waters, the same fate that awaits the unbelievers in today's world.

Glean what you can from these females who found that survival in the fallen world called for a proper partner in life.  Could they have physically saved any "handsome and unsaved" man during that outpouring of water? Was any life boat they had to offer strong enough to stay afloat as the wrath of God poured out against the sinners on that day of judgment? Could their love alone have saved their spouses? I encourage you dear maidens, to prepare yourself now and wait for that God given husband who shares your fatih for floods come in many forms.

Think of the world today. There are so many similarities! The mocking of God's ways and the sin in the hearts of the people...

"And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth,
and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."
~ Genesis 6:5

As heroines of the faith, when deciding on a husband, do not be seduced by those who are undecided or those who need you to help them "figure things out". You are not a savior. Jesus Christ is, and you are required to bound yourself with them that which He saved. Marry that God fearing man in whom you may share a place with in the ark of salvation.  Nothing is more romantic than spending the rest of your days and into heavenly eternity with the faithful husband whom you bound your life with here on earth.

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers:
for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?
and what communion hath light with darkness?"

Angel on My Shoulder

Angel on My Shoulder by Mary Jane Q Cross

The Dove Is Home With Us
by Mary Jane Q Cross

White Valiant soars, as souls await, relying on God to seal our fate
Ghostly morning, silent dawn, our Dove away in unearthly calm

Heart takes pause, hands be still, beat thy wings with Thunder thrill
Off and away, out of sight, may she find where we shall alight?

Never to leave or forsake, home again her grace we take
Wait again, rest and be loved, Seven days more for the flight of the Dove.

Remember Noah's Wife

"And the LORD said unto Noah,
Come thou and all thy house into the ark;
for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation."
~ Genesis 7:1

In the Scriptures, there is one nameless woman that speaks so passionately to me as an example of a God-fearing female, help meet to her husband, and faithful mother to her children. May I present Noah's wife... The Bible does not name her but her reputation stands strong and unblemished. She is never rebuked though never described in nature or appearance either.  One can only surmise that this woman served God with a "meek and quiet spirit" (1 Peter 3:4).  Noah's wife should be an example for all of us in the beauty of serving with a submissive spirit despite all the chaos that surrounds us. We should teach her story to our daughters and may it be a good reminder to us mothers for peer pressure from the world is a strong enemy and one that she faced daily for at least one hundred years of her life!

Have you ever considered what it would take to be Noah's help meet? Some of us may think about our current circumstances and say we have it hard living with this man we call a husband, but would you be strong enough to join your husband against the whole world? This would include her family as well for she was the only one in her lineage that was on the ark. How many times did they insult her husband and the godly lifestyle they had chosen? After spending 100 years building the ark, with everyone laughing, mocking and jeering, would you still be able to stand by your man or would you grow ashamed? Would you constantly question your husband regarding the ark? Would you create doubt in your home and continually ask, "Are you sure God told you to build an ark?" (How similar it sounds to the cunning voice in the garden so many years ago.) How much does the outside world and it's opinions affect you in your household? Whose side are you on when the comments come flying?

Today, we can read in the Scriptures the following:
"But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD." Genesis 6:8
"But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee." ~ Genesis 6:18
But, Noah's wife didn't have access to this information nor was it mentioned that she had any personal correspondence with God in the same way her husband had. She had to decide at one point in her life if she was going to trust and obey, or question the authority of God like her relative would later do and turn back to become a pillar of salt. In Luke 7:32, we are warned to "Remember Lot's wife" and now I present to you, as an encouragement to us all, to "Remember Noah's wife." She chose to follow her husband, support him in his calling, endure the harsh words, hard work and hostile environment in that ultra wicked time.

Married Maidens & Mothers

We as women don't always know what work God is calling our husbands to. We may not even understand it. But our calling is to embrace it and to be a help meet to him (Genesis 2:18). Sadly, this is often the hardest challenge in a marriage for many women. To be in a position of looking "different" is hard. It is especially hard to endure criticism when it can come from their own dear, loved ones!  In their heart they agree with the biblical stands which were mutually made with their spouse, but they can not handle the outside pressure and begin to buckle when it does come. They are weakened at the insults thrown at her and her husband's decisions and allow it to slowly break down their once happy and united home. This is where we must "remember Noah's wife".

Single Maidens

Some of you may feel this peer pressure under the biblical leadership your father purposes for his family. This is excellent training for you to observe your mother and how she handles those awkward situations and comments for your time will come when the world questions your choices and to learn to accept being "different" now will only help to fortify you in your future role as wife.

Stand Strong

Dear reader, at some point in your Christian walk, your family decisions will be scrutinized, criticized and scorned. The world may not like the large size of your family, the way you choose to raise them, educate them or even dress them. You will get attacked verbally and sadly it may come from places you never dreamed. But, it can be no other way for it is written that "if ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you." (John 15:19).

“Fear of others will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.”
~ Proverbs 29:25

Do not let the gossip, words of malice or sarcastic comments penetrate you. Do not entertain thoughts that would make you second guess your father's biblical stand for the family or your husband's godly choices of lifestyle. Stay focused on the Scriptures for there you will find like minded people and the will of God! Many women are in agreement with the  decisions made that are based on the Word but when the testing comes they are quick to pull back and question the wisdom of following the biblical commands. They may even bring up words like "legalistic" or too much "law" when in reality they fear they are not looking like "everyone else". They are different. What we must remember is that Christ called us to be a "peculiar people"(1 Peter 2:9). We shouldn't blend in.

Sisters, our matriarch Mrs. Noah fought these same battles many years ago. Be comforted, for her family did survive to tell the story! Next time you feel distraught, frustrated and that the whole of creation seems against you and your loved ones, "remember Noah's wife"… and the shelter and safety she had from all those massive floods and fountains of water because she followed the path of God. She found that truth and security was in God and not the crowds of people around her. She knew...

"It is better to trust in the LORD
than to put confidence in man."
~ Psalm 118:8

"Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you,
and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven:
for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."

~Matthew 5:10-12

Noah's Knowledgable Daughter-in-Laws

The Dove is Home with Us by Mary Jane Q Cross
Noah's daughter-in-laws have a special place in my heart as the unsung heroes of the Bible. What can we say about them that is actually written?

We can focus on this truth:

These maidens were godly or they would not have been spared from the flood...

God warned them of the trials that would be coming. They would be going inside an ark and beginning life anew! What do you think they did until that final and fatal moment? My guess is that they prepared diligently with their hands and prayed with all their hearts. They learned skills. They were virtuous women. They were of the lineage that could have inspired the Proverbs 31 woman!

They undoubtedly acquired knowledge in sewing, gardening, animal husbandry and food preservation. They must have been educated in the uses of herbs and plants (which they were probably quite proficient in as it was the only God-given food source at that time) for medicinal purposes. Let us not forget the art of making oil from olives, creating pottery for dishes and weaving for clothing.  These women must have been intelligent and skilled for didn't their very lives and loved ones depend upon it for survival?

Dear ladies, we must glean what we can from these godly women. Though little is said, much is known! Hard times were on the way and they were prepared. We are placed in a similar position. Is not Christ's coming closer each day? Are not the signs on the wall? Our future as His return comes closer, is actually likened unto the days of Noah:
"But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." ~ Matthew 24:37-39
Jesus tells us that some intense moments will appear as His return draws closer:
"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows." ~ Matthew 24:7-8 (The list goes on but I have shortened it for the sake of space.)
We are warned of the spiritual battle that will be taking place as well:
"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." ~ 2 Timothy 3:1-7
Are we prepared spiritually? Daily we hear of natural disasters, loss of jobs, sickness and immorality... Are we grounded in the Scriptures to stand strong when calamaties come and test our faith?  Fill your heart, soul and mind with His word. His truths will sustain you (John 8:31-32).

We are promised that it is not easy to follow Him (Luke 14:26-27). Ask Noah's daughter-in-laws if those days aboard the ark, mourning the loss of family members, with the waves crashing against them, pungent smell of animals twenty four hours a day and a lack of fresh earth under their feet was easy. When they landed, the hardships were not over, they had to begin civilization from scratch. These women were warriors of God!

In recent history, we can learn from the matriarchs who lived during the Great Depression. Many of the women were modern at this point in time, relying on the cities and stores to provide their needs. But, hard times came and they were able to put their tucked away skills to use. They planted victory gardens, preserved the bounty, brought small live-stock back into their decorative yards, fashioned clothing for their children out of feed sacks, they patched, scrimped, remade and repurposed.

We don't know what the future holds for any of us but the woman who is prayerful, prepared, skilled and works willingly with her hands, "has no fear for her household"… (Proverbs 31:21 NIV)

"She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come."
~ Proverbs 31:24 NIV

Dear reader, my purpose is not to scare you but to inspire you to embrace those lost arts and skills of the homemaker for we never know when they may prove useful in these uncertain times.
